Dark Girls Documentary Viewing and Colorism's Effect on the African Diaspora

Directed and produced by, D. Channsin Berry and Bill Duke Dark Girls is a fascinating and controversial documentary film that goes underneath the surface to explore the prejudices that dark-skinned women face throughout the world. It explores the roots of classism, racism and the lack of self-esteem within a segment of cultures that span from America to the most remote corners of the globe. Colorism is defined by author Alice Walker as the “prejudicial or preferential treatment of same-race people based solely on their color”. Inborn from slavery, colonialism, and systematic racism, colorism’s effects can be seen throughout the African diaspora. Within the Caribbean and South American countries color and racial hierarchies can be seen in politics, housing, and social standings. And regardless of the region, all African descended men and women have felt the sting of the psychological repercussions of colorism. Societal standards of beauty that idolize European features and lighter skin have left many Black women feeling unattractive and unappealing. The cycle of dysfunction is passed down and continues with Black children, leaving many to equate lightness with intellect. Within the Black community, how do we begin to understand, then remove the colorism embedded within our hearts and minds?
