SQL Saturday Tampa Pre Con - Performance Tuning and Optimization for Modern Workloads

Tim Radney & David Pless present 'Performance Tuning and Optimization for Modern Workloads (SQL Server 2017, Azure SQL Database, and Managed Instance) In this workshop we will examine our performance tuning methodology and the key product ‘know-how’ to support modern workloads. We will compare and contrast the most valuable DMVs and functions, the waits and queues tuning methodology, built-in & 3rd party tools to support these environments including Azure Data Studio, real-world monitoring, on-prem/IaaS and PaaS compared, and the proven best practices to help you get the most out of your SQL based deployment. We will cover technologies such as leveraging Query Store against SQL Server and the similar ‘Query Performance Insight’ in Azure SQL Database. We will focus on auto-tuning, analyzing diagnostics, performance auditing, and extended events analysis across all SQL platforms. We will show you how to leverage Adaptive Query Processing, introduced in database compatibility level 140, which improves some of the most impacting scenarios found in the SQL Server engine including MSTVFs, memory grants, temporary tables, and other critical scenarios. Finally we will cover the benefits and capabilities of Azure SQL Database, Elastic Pools, and Azure SQL Managed Instance with security, high availability, management and the tools that help secure, classify, and monitor your data. In this workshop you will gain a deep understanding of which IaaS or PaaS solution is best for different workloads and applications. Come spend a demo-driven, interactive day with Tim Radney from SQLskills.com & David Pless from Microsoft - Deepen your knowledge of SQL Server in Azure!
